Get Spooky Chic: Creating A Victorian Bat Necklace For Your Fall Wardrobe

The moment is almost here. This Victorian style design is going to be Charming Quail’s 1st official jewelry line. It’s perfect for that cute, Halloween accessory. And it’s a great way to add some vintage Victorian style to your wardrobe all year round. It’s also a great way to add a touch of Gothic style to your ensemble.

The inspiration came from Jack Elliott’s musical vampire saga. Sheri Laruen suggested we ask if he would play live music at our Oct. presentation on the Fort Collins Art Walk. And we both decided to leap off of his vampire saga and come up with something spooky for this spooky month.

The Story Behind the Design

Later on I was telling my wife all about this idea to do a vampire inspired bat pendant and she suggested to style it with a Victorian theme. I loved the idea, so I started researching and digging into Victorian era jewelry and the history around them. I tell you what. There is a lot of interesting history there. But that is a story for another day.

This necklace incorporates the nature themes that were so popular during that time. Animal themes, like bats, were popular, as were amethysts. And how perfect was that. the deep purples of amethyst stones is such a perfect fit for this spooky, vampire necklace for the fall and Halloween time of the year.

Concept Sketch

And originally I drew the concept up with yellow gold, but as I delved further into the project, I couldn’t help wanting to use sterling silver for this vampire inspired piece. There was too much history there between that metal and vampires to use anything else. I guess that will mean that real vampires won’t be able to wear it, but what can I say. Can’t please everyone. LOL.

My favorite part to create was the wings. I love the shapes of bat wings and it was fun making those flowy forms. The claw prongs seemed like the perfect style for this spooky piece, tying in the vampire theme by mimicking the shape of their teeth. When I was done though, I couldn’t help but feel like it was missing something. It was a good looking necklace, but was lacking personality and character. The thing that would make it endearing. So I added a little chip in the left wing. It’s just a little imperfection that adds story and character. That’s really my favorite touch to the design.

As for now, I’m working on getting the 1st one made. I’ve finished the computer model and submitted it to my manufacturer, but I’m in the process of working through the details of the order with them. I can’t wait to get it in my hands and share with you how it turned out. So stay tuned and be sure to hook into the fan feed to see it when it comes in.

And if you love this necklace as much as I do, just let me know and I can tell you more about price and how to get one for yourself, or someone you know that will love this.
